Heavy rain in the Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape area has seen two stages of the Volkswagen Rally cancelled this morning. Rallying on wet and slippery forest roads is nothing new for these speed merchants, and the intense action we have come to expect from the 2012 South African Rally Championship has not disappointed.
Johnny Gemmell (Castrol Team Toyota Auris S2000) leads the way for the rest of the field after the first stage in Longmore Forest this morning, and extended his lead over Jan Habig (Basil Read Ford Fiesta S2000) to 27.3s. Gemmell’s team-mate Leeroy Poulter is third overall, just 01.1s off Habig, and an almighty battle for the rally win is set for the remaining four stages of the event.
Morne Janse van Rensburg (GC Diesel Volkswagen Polo S1600) continues to lead the Class S1600 and Two Wheel Drive Championship category after this morning’s first stage in the Longmore Forest. He is followed by Team Total’s Craig Trott (Toyota RunX S1600) and Ashley Haigh-Smith (Castrol – BP Ford Fiesta R2).
Three more gravel stages are to be run today and the event concludes at Port Elizabeth’s Kings Beach complex at 14h27 with a Super Special Stage.
